Fairfield Half Marathon, and Virtual Half Marathon

Anxiously awaiting news from Rose and Lee regarding their experiences at the Fairfield Half Marathon....

I was closed out of the race, so turned this weekend into an intense training weeked:

Sat 41+ mile bike ride, followed by running intervals for a few miles.  Ouch.

Sunday- The virtual half marathon- My body was toast this morning, was not sure if I would be able to complete.  Running for a time goal seemed like a good idea, but was not possible given the current state of my body.  Got through it somehow, ended it at 13.2 miles, then went swimming at the Y.  This was followed by some strength training.

I have a lot of new training ideas that have been working pretty well for me, so I hope to continue with what I'm doing over the next few weeks.  One thing I have done is turned all my weekday runs into hill runs.  I do repeats up this .75 mile steep hill near my house.  It nearly kills me in this heat, but it really gets me in shape.

Next weekend, I will be traveling to California for a very short stay.  I am excited that I will be meeting with Lynne Cox, who is a champion open water swimmer.  Maybe she can help ma little on my swim stroke as I train for my next tri, which is the Litchfield Hills Olympic Tri in New Harford, CT (.9 mile swim, 26 mile bike, 10K run).

In other news, I was contacted today by Dea Collins from the HTC as they were in need of another woman to run in the Open Category.  I am not a USATF member, but will be in a few minutes.  I am happy to join, but unfortunately my 40th birthday is in April next year, so I will not be able to run for the open team very long....

Until next time, I am planning to send a picture update from my cell when I am in SoCal next weekend.

call to Brickyard

Rose got a call from a guy who wants to run Brickyard tomorrow so consider this a broadcast to any and all who'd like to join us tomorrow morning @ 7:30 am. Lee'll do a little running and then be on two wheels, babying a sore ankle.

Summer Solstice 5K

Barbara Hopkins had a PR (10 seconds faster than any previous 5K, and this course has hills!), Robin Woodbury (coming back after a fall on a trail run), Lani Ralston (it's been 10 days since her tri and she still did 23 minutes!) and Lee Bradley (somehow managed to place but got lots of advice on icing, cross training, applying pressure to ankle w/ ACE bandage, physical therapy, ankle exercise, yoga, doing the alphabet with left foot and a free massage from Nelson Wyman).

70.3 miles later

Today was the REV 3 70.3 triathlon. It has half ironman distance, but the WTC or whoever has a lock on the Ironman brand, so they can't use that in the title.

Anyway, it was held at Quassy Park in Middlebury, CT:

1.2 mile open water swim
56 mile bike (muderously hilly course)
13.1 mile run

It was really a great day.  I am quite proud of myself.  One year ago, this was just a dream and an idea, as I was scared to swim in the open water, terrified to ride a bicycle on  the road, petrified of riding "clipped", overhwelmed by the gear and training involved....

My time was not fast (7:46).  Given my recent person life upsets, my motto was "Don't drown, Don't crash, don't code (go into cardiac arrest) ".

More on this experience to follow, for now I will post before and after photos!

05:30 live from revr transition. Race time one hour away...Major disaster in my personal life this week, so i'm just hoping to live through this :-(

I'm running to Hartford early tomorrow morning to run the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure 5K and hopefully see my friends Mary and Virginia.
