Lani's Mid-week Update

Bear Sighting:
Running on the rails-to-trails behind our house, between RT 20 and Copperhill Rd in Granby, around 11:00 am this past Sunday. A momma bear and three little cubs sauntered right into the trail ahead of me. Waited about 7 scary minutes before they decided to take off.

Training:
Following the RW NYC marathon training program. Tonight's workout was 5 miles of hill running, which I completed after a good 12 hr workday, legs tired from biking yesterday too. I guess what does not kill me will make me stronger!

Health:
Mine- not so good. Endocrine appt last week, my thyroid blood test was about 10 x worse than a normal person's. Looking at the results was stunning, can't believe I've managed to work 60+ hours a week, train and complete a half ironman race, ect. on half of one cylinder...hope the new meds help (soon!)

Racing:
Sea Legs Shuffle 10 miler on Sunday, will be my first racing with the team. Hope I don't let them down given the above medical issues. I guess if I don't run well, they can toss me into the Atlantic.

Brickyarders:
Lee will be gone, ? Rose still in Italy. Mary and I plan to run an easy 5 on Saturday.

Hartford Marathon, or half marathon:
Still not sure what to do, run it so many times that I don't think it would feel right if I skipped it. My training program actually calls for a 22 mile run that weekend, so I've been thinking..... But the MDI Marathon is the following Sunday....

NYC Marathon:
Can't wait, to hear the Cannon shot to start the race, "New York, New York" blaring from the loudspeakers as 40,000 people take off over the Verrazano Bridge, the crowds pulling you through Harlem; Brooklyn; the Bronx; Queens; and into Manhattan; past the life sized statue of Fred Lebow and into Central Park. Besides having my sister from Brooklyn there to cheer me on, my favorite part is emerging from the dark Queensboro Bridge- first a glimmer of daylight, then the distant sounds of the crowd on the streets below, and suddenly out of the tunnel and onto the exit ramp with a giant banner welcoming runners to Manhattan at last!

Boston Marathon:
Thinking about volunteering as medical staff for next year's race.
Got my official "You're In" mailing from the NYC marathon, can't wait to take another run on that "Express"- Staten Island to Central Park, one way no stops

Congratulations

Congrats to Mary and Lee on the Petit 5K.

The Brickyarders ran on Sat, minus one member who had trouble locating us. In an effort to make technology work for us, we are trying to establish a cell phone contact so we don't leave anyone behind.

I decided to forgo the Petit race today. The cause is good, but I really need to put in some good training hours. I was able to ride yesterday afternoon. I've just intalled aero bars on my bike. It is a totally different posittion to ride in, and takes a lot of getting used to so I was practicing with that. I really am not sure if I have all of the adjustments right, I might need to see a bike fitter to be sure.

Today, I did a nice hilly ride, followed by hill running. By the time that was all finished it was about 11:30 am, and I had nearly melted into the pavement.

I was able to make it back to the pool in the late afternoon. The tips and drills that Lynne Cox gave me are awesome. My stroke used to take a lot more energy and really was not all that fast. Now I feel like I kind of glide along, taking breaths only every three strokes, on both sides, learning to sight, ect. I am anxious to see how things go in my next Tri, which is coming up next month.

Tomorrow 7/19 is the first day of the runner's world NYC Marathon training program. The workout is listed as a rest day, I think I can handle that!!!!

*****For a flat fast 5K, check out the 2010 Space Race, Sat Aug. 14, 2010, 8:00 am at the CT Air Nat Guard Base. Registration starts at 6:30 am at the corner of Russell Rd. and Perimeter Rd., East Granby. Run past the planes on the tarmac! Registration info: Plattys.com****************

Brickyard

Ran 8 w/ Lani at Brickyard today. Lani and I talked about the benefits of cross training. I'm beginning to see the good effects of swimming and biking.

Missed my friend Mary who arrived after we'd left. We'll be doing the Petit 5K tomorrow.
