Hogsback 2011 - Pix and Commentary

Here's what every volunteer, sponsor and of course runner will be emailed. Click Lea's T-shirt table picture or the link below it to see my Hogsback 2011 - Pix and Commentary report. We did not get pictures of everybody but every Brickyarder is in there somewhere. Thanks Brickyarders. You are great volunteers and great runners.

Lee

Call to Brickyard!!

First off, let's make sure everybody knows ...

OK, now that we've got that out of the way, Lea, Rose, Brent and Lee are Brickyard definitely'll-be-theres, Tray is Brickyard can't-make-it (something about needing to get ready for a party @ 2 PM),

Barb, Dave and Hogsback Half finishers Mari and Beth (sorry I kinda missed getting all of you in the pic) are Brickyard I'm-not-sure-but-hope-sos. (Click the picture to enlarge.) Mary Roy-Comstock, Mari and Beth crossed the finish line at EXACTLY the same time. Awesome time!

94 Mary Roy-Comstock 46 F East Granby CT 122 2:08:05 9:47
95 Mari Pattavina 38 F Berlin CT 179 2:08:06 9:47
96 Elizabeth Frugale 44 F Kensington CT 178 2:08:06 9:47

Mileage is between 8 and 15 as far as I know. If we miss you there, hope to see you at the party and / or at the Apple Harvest 5K / 5 mile. You're too old to run the Fritters loop but never too old to eat the fritters they serve which I've heard are REALLY good.

Niantic Bay - Stratton nails it

He runs a fabulous 1/2 and doesn't even mention it in the log. I like that about Brent. Well done, sir!

going waaaaay beyond the call

Media Queen Lea Crown spoke to me post race and fantasized about writing something up on Hogsback 11 along the lines of ... "and the skies opened up mid race and greeted the runners w/ a much welcome blue sky, bright sun and soothing breeze" yadda yadda

And I look forward to her perhaps a bit fanciful take on what really happened.

But ... Linda just got a call from Judi A. who among other things told her that she went back to New Hartford this morning w/ her bike in their truck and actually *found* the lid that blew off the HTC 5 gallon jug after they picked it up from the course.

This is just one of the many waaaaaay beyond the call stories of the 11th annual Hogsback Half.

Here's another one. Tray asked for a Hoggie cookie for her son. She already gave the one I gave her some time ago to one of her sons and wanted both to have one. The cookie I gave her yesterday was the last Hoggie. Then a runner asked for a cookie and I asked Tray if she would give it back to me so I could give it to the runner. She gave the very last cookie in the world to the runner. The one she was going to give her son. Think about this.

I got a shipment of 12 cookies several months ago. Kelly Burns Gallagher had the baker send them to me to see if I thought they were good enuf to order 100 more. Linda and I ate a couple when they came. We froze the rest. They keep for months if frozen.

I am going to take one out of the freezer tomorrow morning and give it to her. We're running long at Brickyard @ 7 AM.

The moral? When you give away what you want the most you might be surprised by what happens next.

More to come.

Hi Mari -

I am so happy to hear this. I knew you were going to but now it's official. Thanks so much and I hope you both have a really good race. We are so lucky to have you join us both at Brickyard and now at what I like to think of as a kind of Brickyarders' race. After all, Lea did the media work, Tray is the registration coordinator, Brent will be on a waterstop, Rose will be doing pre-race set up (and then run it) and Mary Almy (not sure you met her yet) is carting a lot of stuff out to the waterstops. Linda and I will be managing it.

Think Hartford as you run Hogsback. It's all about Hartford. And about helping each other out.

Brickyarder BBQ - Sat., Oct. 1st - 2 p.m.

Hi All,

Hope the 2 p.m. time works for everyone for the BBQ. Some people have asked what to bring, others have offered specific things. So far, Linda and Lee are bringing cheesecake and Rose is bringing an appetizer. Brent is going to a football game - BOO! Lea has to tell me what she can eat! Dave & Barb - perhaps another appetizer or a tossed salad? Also, haven't heard from Mari and Beth. I'll touch base with whoever is at Hogsback.

Thanks!

Fall Distance Frolic!

Tray, Brent and Lee ran the 30K Fall Distance Frolic this morning in Stratford. We carpooled and showed up at about 7. It was 47 degrees, windy and sunny out and we took off at 7:41. With Hartford less than a month away, the idea was keep it around 9:30s for the early loops and then bring it down to MP or better with a few miles to go. We did better than that. Tray found a new gear with about 6 to go and each of the last miles was sub 9, sub sub 9, sub sub sub 9, sub sub sub sub 9 etc.

138:58.71.008:58.7
148:52.41.008:52.4
158:25.41.008:25.4
168:32.41.008:32.4
178:20.81.008:20.8
188:24.01.008:24.0

This race is a 1, 2 or 3 loop course depending on whether you want to run 10K, 20K or 30K. The three of us ran pretty much together the whole way. There were three waterstops. One was in front of race director Marty Schaivone's house. People I know who ran included Paul Couzelis, Andie Williamson-Hughes, Kate Stoker, Emmett and Jill Lee (who'll both be running Hogsback), Melody Tortorella, Julie Sharpe-Sidhu, Gail Jaques and Sherry Duff.

Jim Gerweck timed the race. Result are posted at

McDonald's & Training????

I don't know guys - might be time to head out for a Big Mac. Lea, I know you're probably horrified.

http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/health/eat-only-mcdonalds-for-a-month-and-run-a-marathon-one-womans-crazy-challenge-2556030/

I at least thought she would eat grilled chicken sandwiches, apple dippers, and yogurt parfaits. Hope she has a good time carrying an extra 10 lbs. with her for that 26.2 miler.

Call to Brickyard

Well ... it's lookin' like possibly *only* the Dynamic Duo (that would be Mari and Beth) will make it to Brickyard Saturday morning @ 7 AM. Even they (who I think need 14) might not make it cuz they may have other plans.

Yours truly, Tray, and Brent are racing Fall Frolic on Sunday. Brent is doing a "Lee Bradley" and doubling at some race on Saturday but I can't remember where it is. So the Trinamic Trio will be MIA.

Lea'll be at Brickyard but she's got the "afternoon shift" (see her log post).

Rose is gearing up to do 22 on Tuesday and will be joined for some of it w/ Paulette. She's resting on Saturday to be fresh for Tuesday. Rose has decided to run Hogsback and volunteer before and after the race.

I'm not sure about Barb or Dave - I know Barb's reporting in from San Diego so it doesn't look like she'll be on the greenway.

Linda and Rose'll be walking locally on Sunday while the Fall Frolic group is burning up the roads in Stratford.

I am happy to report we have 139 people registered for Hogsback. Online registration closes tomorrow so if you want to do it that way ... get crankin'!

PS

I added the group shot we recently took that included the Dynamic Duo to our log page so if you visit it there's a 1 in 11 chance you'll see them (there are now 11 pix).

Have a nice weekend everybody. Pack a sweatshirt. It's gonna be in the 30s!

Lea's Bread Is Getting Stale

Good showing this morning! We missed Lea but now know from the log that she skipped that important step of actually turning on the alarm so setting the alarm didn't help much! Glad to hear you're fine. And that you will be running today locally and tomorrow long at Brickyard.

Carolyn Lloyd came a little after we took off and told Linda that she's going to build up her miles a bit and join us in a few weeks.

Dave did make it and decided to go real short and give his injury time to strengthen. Barbara went out 4 and back for a total of 8. Mari and Beth went a total of 18. Linda put water, vitamin water, granola bars etc. at the parking lot off Arch Street and all of us stopped twice and rested a bit / drank / ate.

(This is the garage / parking lot area where we took our waterstop break. The Dog Pound Building is up the road, on the right. Thank you Linda. Thank you Google Earth.)

Rose covered about 13 today. Brent, Tray and Lee went out 7.5 and back, picking up the pace in the last couple of miles.

Met a gal who works at Fleet Feet and invited her to run Hogsback. When she and Tray saw the T-shirt and medal, they were both ready to run it. Tray was reminded by the Race Director that she is at the registration table ... I'd like to run it too but think it best to make sure all the jobs get covered and will run long on Monday, the 26th, instead. Sounds like Rose will do her long (22) run the Thursday before Hogsback and will work on the food etc. at Hogsback.

Lea, Mari and Beth will run 7 to 9 early before Hogsback and then run Hogsback. We'll try to have the arrows, signage etc. in place early enough so they will know their way. Would be useful to carry a map of the course in case it's not marked when they start.

The Fall Distance Frolic (10/20/30K) in Stratford on the 18th starts @ 7:30. Lee'll pick Brent up (and Tray? others?) early Sunday morning and head down. I think Mari, Beth and Rose will be running Brickyard on Saturday and won't do the Stratford race the next day.

Great run today. Beth says she saw a countdown sign in New Haven that says 35 days till Hartford! Plenty of time to get that pace just right so that on race day you can meet your goal, whatever it is.

Lee

PS - Beth uses her cell phone to track her runs. Who needs a Garmin?! She gets pace, distance, maps etc. from it!

PPS - However ... Beth, Mari and the Thin Man have yet to log their runs by clicking Sonic The Cat. I thought you all checked that little box on your Brickyarder application form that agreed to do this. This is pretty much unacceptable and ... and ... we're ... very ... You might consider doing this. You would not believe the stuff those who do log are saying about you.

Call to Brickyard!

You are invited to join us at Brickyard Road tomorrow morning at 7 AM!

Lea put in a request for a couple of loaves of bread from New Haven so we'll be taking care of her tomorrow on this front.

It's been a rather mixed week of running and not running for many Brickyarders. From tender heals to strained ITBs, we've seen it all. But we're a smart bunch and have chosen to take a few rest days, keeping the race dates in focus.

Carolyn Lloyd will join us tomorrow (a veteran HTC member who hosted the Eddy Gorecki bench dedication gathering at her house last year). She will be running only 5 and at a slow pace but is looking for company. I'm thinking some of us who are going long might be able to go South across the bridge and then come back to the parking lot for a warm up before heading North and then back to complete a long run.

I think Lea's looking to complete her 2nd 20. Brent, Lee and Tray have 15 in mind. Rose tells me she wants to run 12. If Dave's ITB is OK maybe he'll be running. Barb did run New Haven so we're hoping she'll be there. Not sure about anybody else but of course would love to see you! Who knows, maybe Napoleon'll do another 20!

Linda, Rose, Lea and I are in Hogsback mode, building our volunteers, pricing bagels, blitzing the media and getting excited about the 100 or so registered so far runners. Thanks everybody for stepping up to make this a good one. "Hoggie" is proud of you!

New Haven!

New Haven 5K and 20K - Monday, September 5, 2011

LBrad   Photos by LBrad   Photos

The fast guys

Mary Almy ran the 5K

Rose ran the 20K - Lee ran it in w/ her

Tray ran the 20K

Brent took Lee and Tray down and Linda took Rose and Jeannette. Mary, who worked all day yesterday and had to head back to work after the race today, drove as well. It was a bit muggy and got into the 80s by the time we were finishing. Mary crossed in about 33 minutes. Barbara Kream ran the 5K and Dave Condit ran the 20K. Brent, Lee, John Courtmanche and Dave Condit all finished very close to each other, averaging about an 8 minute pace. Tray finished in 1:51 and change. Rose crossed around 2:08. We all had fun trying to find each other in the park after the race! The beer line was a mile long. Between all of us we walked away with about 8 loaves of bread.

It was great to see so many friends today.

Ronnie Behringer, Andie Williamson-Hughes, Tom Walsh, Lani Ralston, Catherine Lyons, Kate Stoker, Paul Couzelis, Al Metro, Marty Schaivone, Sherry Duff, John Krasniewicz, Rob Fryer, Larry Chaves, Bob Dacey, Bob Tumiski, Keron Smith

Well done, everybody!

Call to Brickyard!

I think this breaks the record for how late somebody posts on what they envision for Saturday at Brickyard. But in case you were wondering ...

Per usual, the gun goes off @ 7 AM sharp.

Lea's going for 20 and Lee and Tray will join her for the 1st and 2nd 10 respectively. Mari and Beth are rumored to be at 16 in their plan.

New Haven is on Monday which is not something Lea, Mari or Beth are worried about but given Rose, Lee and Tray's 19 to 21 run last Thursday and tomorrow's "short long," Lee and Tray are obviously living on the edge.

Not sure about anybody else.

Rose should be fresh for Monday's 20K. Barb's running 3.1 and streaker Dave will no doubt once again show us how to do it.

Oh, don't forget Brent. He's been in front of me waaaaaaaaaay too many times recently. And I fear will not disappoint on Monday. But, trust me, I'm racing.

Lee

Brickyarders Social at Tray's House

Hi Everyone,

Okay, I've been talking about this for at least a month so I'm officially inviting everyone over to my house - to celebrate friendship and the awesome running season we've had. Spouses, significant others are welcome as well.

We have run out of weekends (due to racing schedule) for Sept. I would like to throw out a few dates in Oct. People can indicate when they are available and we'll decide based on the majority who are available on one of the dates.

Sat., Oct. 1st
Sat., Oct. 8th
Sun., Oct 9th

Please respond in comments (if you're interested and what date works best for you).

Thanks!

Southington Apple Harvest Festival

As you can see from the title, I am promoting our local Apple Harvest Festival. There is a 5 mile run and a 5K run - start time is 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2. This is 2 weeks before Hartford.

I have a copy of the race application - it was emailed to me. But I don't know how to do an attachment on this blog. Maybe Lee can help with that.

Anyway, it's a nice race and they serve delicious chili at the end, as well as bagels, cookies, donuts, fruit.
