Meriden Tradition Run

Lea, Bob Najarian, and I (Tray) ran up to Castle Craig this morning and back down. The hill, about 1.25 long, was definitely a pace killer. Not the worst I've ever run though. The turnout was really good - about 300 people.

Lea took a couple of pictures. There were a group of guys (Crossfit training fanatics) carrying a THICK tree trunk the whole way. Talk about endurance. I also got to see "almost naked guy." Very funny.

Lea had a great suggestion for us to meet at Hubbard Park sometime for some hill training. Then she graciously offered shower facilities at her house as well as an all you can eat brunch. :)

(I may not have climbed up the mountain, but the least I can do is put what Lea took on the blog! - Lee)

Re: [Brickyarders] Call to Brickyard!!

We haven't forgotten about you, Lee.  Good luck at the doctor's!

For tomorrow, I am starting at 7:30 to get in a couple of miles before Brent and the rest of the gang get there at 8.  My problem with starting later is that the mileage I/we have to do is going to take 3+ hours on many weekends and Barry is taking karate lessons so I want him to be able to do that.  However, if everyone else wants to start at 8:30, I can always get in a few miles before the "official" start.  I would say leave it at 8 for tomorrow though, to avoid confusion.

Mid-40's?  What a treat!

Lea's talking about doing 10. Tray's got 20 in mind. Lee (remember Lee?) will be seeing his doctor today and is pretty confident he'll get the go ahead to run. So I'm thinking 10 for me. Rose thinks we should make the official start time 8:30 AM as the winter is upon us (although the amount of snow is ... well ... non-existent). Rose'll be there and would like to do 10. So ... how cool is this? Lani? Mary? Brent (I expect he'll be there). And, give it another week and ... Mike T. too?

The Meriden Tradition Run is the next day. I floated a rumor I'd do it but a good friend of mine ... well ... not this year. Lea'll be there. Something about drinking wine after came up.

Snow Snow Go Away, Come Back on a Non-Running Day!

Brent and Tray will be at Brickyard tomorrow morning. I'm starting at 7:30, Brent is starting closer to 8. It may be a lesson in futility but we are going to give it a shot. It's not out of the realm for the forecast to be different from the early predictions. Let's hope for the best!

Peoples State Forest

http://www.coolrunning.com/bin/res_load/res_print.cgi?r=12/ct/Jan15_People_set1.shtml

According to Tom Buckley and others, it was 11 below 0 Fahrenheit (w/ wind chill) before the race started. 55 people ran. Mike Taricani volunteered, helping out at the finish line and taking pictures. He sent the following this way:

Ken Owen, Lani Ralston, Tracy Vroeginday, Lee Bradley, Rose Famiglietti and Brent Stratton ran a variety of distances. Brent & Ken did the certified 8.5+ and Tray and Lee the certified 17+. I think Lani managed a way to run 15, Rose about 10.

Bekkie Wright and Joe Poloquin, Kc Klett, Todd Brown, Marc Robaczynski, Jerry Shimoda-Peterson, Norlean Litwinka, and Kelly Gallagher ran. Norlean distributed race applications for the May 20th 5K race in Naugatuck in her son's memory. Please support her effort. The Michael Litwinka IV Memorial Run enhances the public's awareness about asthma and funds critical research.

David Reik handled the timing  and Linda handled the driving and cookie delivery and played 2nd fiddle to Mike T. in the photography department.

Yours truly, Usain Bolt wannabe proved himself totally unworthy, placing dead last in 2:43:11. Tray

ran well but missed beating her last year time by a few seconds. I expect the cold and her feeling a little sick in the last 4 contributed. Rose's feet were frozen for the first 4 or so miles.

So ... time to shower up (done), put comfy clothes on (done), maybe get a fire going in the fireplace, think of something you want to do and relaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaax.

Retro Running Program and Crowdrise

Chip and I wrote the program 10 years ago. It's very dated but sometimes old stuff is the best. I've updated it today and think it's pretty useful. To get the software, download http://primepuzzle.com/qb/run401f.ZIP.

Jumping ahead to the present, a definitely NOT retro "running program" is the one Sophia Bush heads up.

She calls it F CANCER. I just gave $29 to it. Check it out at http://www.crowdrise.com/give2fcancer.

Call to Brickyard

We'll be meeting at Brickyard tomorrow morning @ 8 AM. Lea asked in the log what the meeting time was so looks like she'll be there. Will be great to see her ... it's been a while! Mike T. is, wisely, not coming, giving his tendonitis time to heal. Rose is looking to do 10. Tray and Lee have 15 in mind. Not sure what Brent's plans are. Linda will be coming, ready to walk w/ her new MP3 player. I've been having fun putting songs on it.

Peoples Forest 7.5 / 18.0 (roughly) is next Sunday.

I'm taking today off (although it's downright gorgeous and Linda and I are going for a walk).

Out of Office: [Brickyarders] Call to Brickyard

I am out of the office today. If you need information about UCHC graduate programs, please contact Ms. Stephanie Rauch at 860-679-4509.

Farewell to 2011

Of course I can only speak for myself, but 2011 was a fabulous year of running and an even better year for solidifying frienships. :)

Regarding running, the 2 main things I learned (there are probably more if I think about it) are:

  1. The body is often capable of much more than what the mind believes is possible.

  2. A negative race experience can be one of the best things to happen in order to progress and accomplish even greater/more meaningful goals.

Ever since the big bonk at Hartford, I have discovered a new zeal for running and have never been more motivated to push myself even harder. I look forward to experiencing the challenges and successes (and disappointments as well) with an amazing group of people.

Happy New Year everyone!
Tray
