Call To Brickyard!

You never know what the universe will look like until the time is now.

My cryptic introduction to what I *think* it will look like tomorrow morning @ 7 AM, at least in the Universe called Brickyarders:

Because Tracy's going to be running w/ Steph and Brent took a spill on Wednesday which we hope and think isn't serious but which has resulted in a 5K in Portland he and Lee were to run not happening ...

Mike, Rose, Lani, Lee, Mary and of course possibly other surprises will be running. Mike says he'll be there at 7 to do about 7. Rose and Lani have mentioned 7:30 and a distance of 7 miles. So ... are you still w/ me, the slightly earlier 7 AM people will try to reappear in the standard parking lot (as opposed to the virtual parking lot) at 7:30 to complete whatever distance they have left.

We hope Mike, Lea, Brent, Lani, Lee, Tracy, Rose, Dave, Barbara all have great New Havens, be that 5 or 20K.

Re: [Brickyarders] Re: [Brickyarders] Re: [Brickyarders] Re: [Brickyarders] Virtual Dirt Pile

Okay, see y'all at the VDP.  I told Rose I'd run toward the Brickyard lot and then back to the VDP (which will give me about 10 miles).  I will still have another 12 to cover so will go 6 out and back in the new direction.

This was posted on FB from the women's group with whom I used to run:
"Ladies (and Gentlemen),
Be sure to either leave your purses/wallets at home, or put them in the trunk of your car before you leave your house for a run. 3 of us had our windows smashed and purses stolen this morning while on our run....on the bike path in Simsbury no less. :("

I usually cover my purse with a towel.  However, if someone wants to break into your car to look for a purse or wallet, you're still stuck with a broken window.  I'm now only bringing my license with me so as not to have to cancel credit/bank cards in the event of a break-in.

Mr. Mike ... please correct me if I'm wrong with this.

You see where Spielman Highway comes in? Where that joins w/ Canton Rd is where you should drive your car and is (I think) where the VDP is.

Instead of taking the right off Farmington Ave onto Brickyard Rd, keep going on Farmington Ave toward Unionville. Go strait at the intersection (don't bear left, don't bear right) which will be Main St. This becomes Collinsville Rd. This becomes Canton Rd. The river is on the right. Where Spielman Highway meets this road on the left park your car, get out, lace up and start running.

I think Brent and Tracy will head toward the regular parking lot, and try to meet anybody who wants to start later (like 7 AM). They will then turn around, and head back toward the VDP. Tracy's going 22, Brent less, Rose is talking about doing 10.

Virtual Dirt Pile Details

Based on Mike's remarks, it looks like going all the way to Spielman Highway is too far. The map and satellite map below should help. The parking lot we want is off Collinsville Rd. Looks like the address is about 310 Collinsville Rd. How am I doing Mike?

Re: [Brickyarders] Re: [Brickyarders] Re: [Brickyarders] Virtual Dirt Pile

Lee's driving instructions are good. The VDP you speak of that is just before the new section is the parking lot off "Collinsville Road". That is the best place because it has the bigger parking lot of the two.

Call to Brickyard!

Looks like we'll have a good showing this Saturday! And it looks like going fairly long is what people want to do. I'm suggesting a start time of 6:15 AM based on the feedback and that we head South toward the VDP (Virtual Dirt Pile) and then loop back to the parking lot and keep on going North. Distances of between 18 and 22 have been suggested. Of course, go less, go more. But go! Special mention goes out to Ms Crown who is "officially crazy" and who's looking for support, Mr Brent S. ("S" is for Slackin') whom we welcome back from two wheels to 10 toes (I hope), Tracy ("Bungee Runner") Vroeginday, whose Brad Hudson workouts put the rest of us on notice to get serious about our running.

HTC is 50! Kelly Burns Gallagher's history and Hogsback 1/2 Celebration!

When I moved back to Connecticut from Georgia in August of 2005, I had begun to take running seriously, or at least seriously for me and I wanted to join an organization that would help me further my interest in the sport.  After some googling, I discovered the Hartford Track Club and sent an e-mail to Peter Hawley telling him that I was interested in the club and asking if I could help out.  Peter responded that the club needed a new treasurer and after attending my first board meeting in September of 2005, I was appointed to the position (in retrospect I don't think Peter fully knew what he was getting himself into when he asked me to join the Board).  When I accepted the position in the fall of 2005, I had no idea about the history of the organization or the opportunities I would be presented with.  Over the past seven years, I was given the opportunity to found and direct the Solstice Sprint 5K and the Greater Hartford 1/4 Marathon, to direct the Hogsback Half Marathon, to develop a scholarship program for runners from Connecticut high schools and to make over $20,000 in donations to charitable organization such as the Blazeman Foundation.  Now that the Hartford Track Club will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in September of 2012, I have been given the opportunity to plan an anniversary celebration honoring the Hartford Track Club and it members.

Before the details of the celebrations, a little history.  The Hartford Track Club was formed in September of 1962 by charter members Charley Dyson, Bill Smith, Willie Gagnon, Bob Bamberger and Don Pirie.  In December of 1962, the club organized  the "Holiday 6," its first race. This race was held annually at Kenney Park in Hartford and attracted fields of up to 30 runners. In the late sixties, the race was moved to Goodwin Park and became the forerunner of the annual Joe Vailonis 10K, which now takes place on New Years Day.

By 1967, the club membership grew from the original 5 members to 14 members.  By 1968, membership was up to a total of 18. In the early years dues were $1.00 a year. The Hartford Track Club joined the A.A.U. briefly in 1965 but had to cancel its membership due to lack of funds. In 1968, the Hartford Track Club rejoined the A.A.U. and has been a member ever since.

Noting the then complete absence of road races in Connecticut during the winter months, in 1972 the Hartford Track Club began a series of winter races and these "Winter Series" races continue to this day

The Hartford Track Club Newsletter was first published in 1972 (thanks to Lee Bradley here's a copy of a 1979 Newsletter). The newsletter was printed irregularly whenever there was enough club news to warrant the postage cost of sending it out. Beginning in 1980, the Hartford Track Club began regular publication of its newsletter (once again thanks to Lee Bradley here's a copy of Volume 1, Issue 1 from February of 1980) and publication of the newsletter continues today

In 1975, Cindi Cassidy became the first female member of the club. In that same year the Hartford Track Club also passed the 150 member mark. Today the Hartford Track Club numbers over 400 runners, almost half are female.

Today the Hartford Track Club provides motivation, group runs, training opportunities, a comprehensive set of member's results and regularly fields USA Track & Field Grand Prix teams and teams at other events. In addition to the long running winter series, the Hartford Track Club also sponsors a four race series that includes the Greater Hartford 1/4 Marathon, Solstice Sprint 5K, Hogsback Half Marathon and the 8K Cross Country Challenge. Theses races series have grown to include over 1,000 runners annually.

As we approach the Hartford Track Club's 50th Anniversary in September of 2012, its time to celebrate.  In conjunction with the 2012 Hogsback Half Marathon on September 22, 2012, we'll be throwing the Hartford Track Club a 50th Anniversary Party.  All activities will be taking place at the Goodwin Dam, Durst Road in Colebrook Connecticut

Hogsback Half Marathon - 9 a.m. The half marathon will begin at 9 a.m. and the course will be open for three hours.  Both the race shirts and the finisher medals will be special "50th Anniversary" editions and all runners are invited to our post-race 50th anniversary celebration.  Runners can register online here or can down load a paper application here

50th Anniversary Celebration Begins - 10:30 a.m.   As the first half marathon finishers cross the finish line, our 50th Anniversary Celebration will begin.  We'll have a catered lunch (baked chicken, red potatoes, salad, apples, apple pie, cider donuts and the traditional post-race bagels and bananas), music, raffles (every runner, guest and volunteer will receive 5 tickets for free) and give aways of Hartford Track Club apparel.

Family 1/2 Mile Race - 11:15 a.m.  There will be a 1/2 mile fun run across the Goodwin Dam.  No registration is required and all children who participate will receive a special finishers award.

Awards & Recognition Ceremony - 11:30 a.m.  The Hogsback Half Marathon awards ceremony will begin promptly at 11:30 a.m.  In addition to awards for the overall and age group winners of the half marathon, we will also be recognizing and presenting awards to the Hartford Track Club's founding members and individuals who have been members for 25+ and 10+ years.

Raffle - 12 p.m.  After the awards ceremony, we'll have some great prizes to raffle off.  If you or someone you know would like to donate a raffle prize (you'll receive recognition on our website, Face Book Page and at the event) please contact me at kaburns1214@gmail.com

I hope to see lots of familiar faces on September 22, 2012 to help the Hartford Track Club celebrate 50 years of running in Connecticut.

Bridge of Flowers

Bridge of Flowers 10K - 8/11/12 - Shelburne Falls, MA

Three Brickyarders ran the 34th annual Bridge of Flowers 10K this morning. 2 mile loop starting at the old iron bridge then up THE HILL for about 4/10 of a mile (11% grade, steeper than Mt. Washington) then DOWN! Absolutely beautiful course. We missed Brent due to injury. Next year. Ed Kirby (75) ran today and is running Falmouth tomorrow. This course has a figure 8 loop where you can see runners coming at you as you go out. I looked for Sri but never saw him (he was a good 5 minutes in front of me so this is probably why). First time I saw him was at the end of the race.

Linda took pictures w/ her cell phone. Click the link above or the picture to see them all.

Re: [Brickyarders] Call to Brickyard!

I am not going to be at Brickyard on Sat.  Barry's mother is visiting and he will have to take her back to NJ at some point so the schedule is up in the air.  I may actually run tomorrow late afternoon instead, depending on when these nasty thunderstorms get here.

Good luck to everyone racing BOF!

Brent just informed me today that he will no longer be running with us; he has decided to take up competitive cycling because he really likes the unitard.
