Colchester '13

Photos by Taricani, Bradley and Bradley

Brickyarders showed up in force this morning at the Colchester 1/2. Larry Regan gets the prize, crossing in 1:36. Not far behind, Sri Bodkhe, in 1:38. He's volunteering tomorrow at the 10 mile Jones race in Northampton where Tray will double, weather permitting. Speaking of weather, Ultragirl is on WTNH's s**t list because she's been posting to their weather page that their lead meteorologist probably got his weather degree from Sears & Roebuck  (not really, but I couldn't resist).

Tray was semi-bummed because she was 5 seconds slower this year than last. Mike Taricani ran somewhere between 2 and 2:10. He's talking about running a marathon as a training run and doing the Redding 1/2 (all pre-50k on April 21). Lea did a 2:10, beating her brief sick down time of the last few days. Tough fitting a 1/2 in when you are trying to get a million dollar grant approved.

Sri gave Lee a hard time about not displaying his standard grimace at the end of the race. He took it easy today and is enjoying experimenting with not running too fast too early. Lani traded places with Tray and Lee and finished in a comfortable 1:56.

Brent couch potatoed due to "apd" (airline passenger disease). We wish him well and think he was smart to sit this one out.

Doc Whitney

Our friend Dr George Whitney died today. The above picture is taken from the cover of his 2011 book Come Jog With Me. He was 93.

His daughter Carolyn wrote the following today:

Sad news. Dad died peacefully at 4:20 pm today. I'm including pics of him from yesterday. He was determined to run a 5K. We got him up & dressed. He walked to the end of the driveway and came back to wave goodbye.

If you would pass the word, I'd really appreciate it.
Carolyn
Marty Shaivone responded in this way:
We have lost a friend, a spirit, a dad - even to those he wasn't related to, a true wit, a man of conviction, a man younger than his years.
We send the family our collective message of Love for Doc, and warmth on what is likely a cold night in VT.
But there is a new star in our night sky for us to look towards.
The oft used cliche will be repeated- "he lived life on his own terms." And for once I will believe it when I hear it.

Colchester and / or Jones

Two races that I know of this weekend. People are switching around due to weather reports etc. etc. Do what floats your boat and do it with your long term goals in mind. May it be a great weekend for everybody. Run / walk / drive safely and stay positive.

Rose reports in!

5K in the park on the grass and sand. I think I did 29:30... After that I went running at the Legacy trail and I did 2 fast miles I felt great! too bad this 5K was in the Park. They had 5K and 10K. I signed up for the 10k then I switched to the five. I wanted to see what my 5K Time is right now! I have to pick easy course on the road next time to see my 5K time. I hope you had a good Run with the group today miss you guys. Rose:)

Change of plans!

This is a tough call but the weather report for Saturday looks like running at Rogers Orchard might be not smart.

Here's the report as of this evening. Snow showers early will become steadier snow in the afternoon. Temps nearly steady in the low to mid 30s. Winds N at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 80%. Snow accumulating 1 to 3 inches.

Tray and I are going to run at Rogers Orchard *tomorrow*, starting at 10:30 AM. If the weather forecast changes and it looks OK for Saturday, Mike, Lea, Brent, David, Barbara and anybody else could still opt to run at Rogers Orchard at 7 AM. If it still looks like snow my guess is that you would opt to not travel to Southington and would prefer running locally.

Re: [Brickyarders] Rogers Orchards

Is that address the parking lost across the street from Rogers Orchard Store? Is it OK if a bunch of cars park there because I thought it belonged to the store.

Rose has got a coach!

Rose called me the other day and told me she has a coach. His main idea is you need to train for a specific race. Pick a goal time and train accordingly. He has once a week, 1 1/2 hour sessions and she's pretty much wiped out at the end. When I first heard about his approach I was dubious. But the more I think about it the smarter it seems. They mix up 800s w/ jogs (sound familiar?!) and at the very end of the workout he has them go full out for a brief period.

This is us on the Legacy Trail in Sarasota. Wouldn't it be nice if Brickyard looked like this today?! OK, time to head back out for shovel session # 4.

"They're coming to take me away..."

Dinner conversation at the Vroegindays:

Me:  "Looks like Brickyard will be under snow until April."

Andrew:  "Mom, what's Brickyard?"

Barry:  "A place where crazy people go."  LOL

Re: [Brickyarders] Happy Belated Birthday Brent!

RE: [Brickyarders] RE: [Brickyarders] Nemo Rules!

I plan on doing a super awesome core workout: 10,000 x 10 lb swings over the shoulder for several hours AKA shoveling the driveway! Can't wait!

On a more serious note,  everyone stay safe out there,
Lani

Can't run long because I have company teleconferences all morning. I can get in 5-6 miles before 7am. So I'll be running long on Sunday.   -Mike

Storm Nemo looks like it's gonna be rolling in tomorrow ... so get your long run in early tomorrow morning. I'm running to Reservoir #3, around the loop and back home. This is about 18. I'll be starting at 7 AM from my place in Newington. Pick a route that works for you. Join me if you can. Saturday at Brickyard looks unlikely. Ditto the HTC Winter Series run on Sunday.

Server down

The server we use for logging our runs has been up and down all morning so if Sonic the cat isn't running, this is your signal that you'll have to wait a while to log your run. If the problem persists I'll give the host provider a call. Meanwhile, keep on running!
