The Beast

The Salisbury Beast is on October 24, a Sunday. 5K. It will be my 160th Connecticut town. It's called Salisbury Beast for a reason. In the 1.5 mile climb on the way out you climb 1000 feet.

From their website we read: Connecticut's most monstrous 5k! Climb 1000 ft in 1.5 miles, enjoy one of the state's most stunning views and haul ass back down for a PR you'll never forget!

So, for you math people, what's that in slope, or grade? I think Mt. Washington is an 11% grade. The Beast is steeper.

If the hypotenuse is 1.5 miles and you rise 1000', to get the slope you need to consult Dr. Pythagoras.

 (1.5 * 5280)^2 = 1000^2 + x^2

So, x = square root of ((1.5 * 5280)^2 - 1000^2) = 7856.61

and slope = rise over run = 1000 / 7856.61 = .127 or almost a 13% grade.

Summary: The Beast is slightly steeper than Mt. Washington (but don't forget, it's way shorter and ... what goes up must come down).

There's talk that Lani, Barbara, and Lee are considering doing this together and switching the Brickyard run from Sunday to Saturday that weekend. Tray and Jason?

Zagata / Snow showdown!

In a 14-year period our very own Tracy Zagata has been unable to beat a gal I know (Diane Snow) at the Southington Apple Harvest 5 miler. This year was different.

Lee, Lani, Barbara, Mike, Linda, and Marco ran in the Tunxis Mead area this morning. We did 3 3/4 miles using a run / walk regimen. (Lani has a cool device that beeps at 3 min then at 30 sec then at 3 min etc. The durations can be adjusted). Plan for next Sunday: 8 AM, start at old Brickyard parking lot and head south on the trail til you meet Red Oak Hill Rd and then turn around and come back. That would be about 3.86 miles. (If anyone wants to run longer you can cross Red Oak Hill Rd and continue on the newer section of the trail.)

My idea of how to hook up this Sunday

This is what I propose for those Brickyarders who want to meet up this Sunday. Drive Rt 4, take Brickyard Rd right turn and drive a mile in and park at the parking lot. Get there by 7 AM. Run south on the trail. Just after we cross the bridge there's an offshoot to a connecting trail that leads to the Tunxis Mead Athletic Fields where we'd meet up w/ Lani and company at 8 AM. I plan on using this approach.

See the comment to this post for directions if you want to drive directly to where Lani et al will start.

From Lani

By popular demand, we will have another group run/walk at Tunxis Meade in Farmington.

Date: Sunday 8/22/2021
Time: 8 am
Location: Tunxis Mead Road, Farmington. Meet in parking lot between baseball fields.
Distance: 3 miles
Plan: Run / walk intervals

I plan on being there. I have run there once. Open fields, Very beautiful. Let's support Lani and her idea to go to different places for run/walk outings. Remember, Sunday this week.

Group run revival!

Mike, Tray, Barbara, and Lee know about this. You?

Lani writes ...

Hi Lee,

For next Saturday, 8/14/2021, we will meet at the parking lot on Iron Horse Boulevard, Simsbury, from the parking lot between the bandstand and the playground at 8 am.

The distance will be 4 miles.

As far as the regular weekly group runs, I plan to start the first weekend in September.

I am asking for people to vote on either Saturday or Sunday on the Instagram page.

Next time you go out for a run, think about how complicated the human body is.
