Runnng with Sherman

Review of Running with Sherman by Christopher McDougall - 5 stars - Lee Bradley - 9/27/22

This book was so interesting to me I've ordered eight copies to give to friends. A friend of mine gave her copy to me. She was telling me about it and the story sounded similar to another book I've read and it was quickly explained by the fact that Born to Run was Christopher McDougall's first book.

You don't have to be a runner to like this book. But a runner will definitely like it. It's about a guy who gets the crazy idea of running a race in the Rocky Mountains tethered to a donkey (Sherman).

This is a thing, I learned -- donkey / man (or woman it turns out) races. Annual events, attended by hundreds, distances of 15 to 29 miles. Difficult. Elevations where the air is thin. Streams that need to be crossed.

Sherman is a rescue, and when found is in very bad shape. Filthy, his hooves all curled up. He is tended to and much later is able to walk, then run. There are about 5 main characters (and 3 donkeys) in the book and many more along the way. Tanya is one of them and she is responsible early on for helping Chris and Sherman.

This autobiographical story is not just about training to run a crazy ultra with a donkey. It's also about the healing effect animals can have on compromised young boys and young adults. There are digressions throughout the chapters, scientific references telling us how autistic boys are often aided by their association with animals. (I ran a race in Connecticut a while back and still have the hat I bought with its Little Britches Therapeutic Riding logo.)

Zeke is a college student who is helped when he hooks up with the author after an unsuccessful suicide. A brilliant, athletic, good looking guy, something went terribly wrong. He asks his mother if he can give Chris a call. Slowly but surely he and Sherman bond and somewhat reluctantly Chris takes him on as one of the three burrow / human team. Mikla (Chris's wife) and Chris are the other two. About 2/3 of the way in the book, Zeke gets his leg broken and the impossible challenge begins to look even less likely to succeed.

Tanya herself (who helped everybody in many ways) is blindsided when her husband leaves her. She was to be the person who would transport the animals from Pennsylvania to Colorado. She needs to take care of the farm, now, alone. Who's going to pull the trailer?

As odds against the adventure slip away, two not young at all ladies surface and take the job!

McDougall writes extremely well. The book is even at times laugh out loud funny!

You will love this book. Trust me.

Tray goes over 40, Lee goes under 12 on Saturday

40 is miles, 12 is minutes per mile. Tray completed a 9 hour ultra on Saturday, placing 2nd woman and 3rd overall. Lee completed his 168th Connecticut town on Saturday in the Bozrah 5K. He didn't place (and got beat by almost 85 year old Jose Wernock in the final 50 yards despite Linda's yelling at him as she saw the impending rout). Here is a slip of paper Tracy shared which shows B, C, and A women.

Here's what Lee, Linda, Mena and friends looked like at Bozrah and his Garmin.

Scottish Rite 5K

Brent and I ran the Scottish Rite 5K this morning in Newington. I ran a 12+ minute pace (but placed cuz there was an 80+ division). He was only about 100 yards behind Miguel Ramirez at the end. I encouraged Samantha Marzucca (#19 above) at the end and she placed! There were four 169 members (Linda is the photo bomber 😊) in the first picture, Brian Fidler, Jennifer Jansen, me, and Deb Olsen.

Fun Run #3

Lani ran the 5K and then took these 2 pix of Tom Walsh and me finishing last night's Newington Fun Run. Linda handed out the place # paper slips (while brandishing a "smoking gun").

Team Brickyard!

Lani, Lee, and Larry placed (hmmm, does the letter L help?) Mike was ahead of Lee at the end (but failed to carry his bib # out to enough decimal places). Christine, despite a hip that's not 100%, was ahead of Mike and Lee. T minus 5 Tracy and Jason were both ahead of the three of us. Brent and Lani were super close. We missed our Barbara who could not make it. Maggie Rose (not officially on the team but made the picture) was her stand-in!

Well done Team Brickyard!

Brent 24:50

Tray 25:51

Jason 26:26

Christine 29:37

Larry 21:24

Lani 24:25

Lee 33:25

Mike 33:06

Upcoming races and ideas for places to run

.

Chatted w/ Peter during this morning's Brickyard run and was told that he and Lani have been running in Fisher Meadows Recreation Area. Here's a map.

Maybe we could put together a group run there.

Mike took a group picture this morning. Will post as soon as I get it. He is running the 8K in Bethel tomorrow.

Peter is running a race in Salisbury, CT tomorrow. Here's what Greystone Racing says about it.

If you are looking for a race, then the fourth of July is the day. Lake Wononscopomuc in Salisbury, CT has an 8K road race. The race starts at 8:00 AM sharp. The start and finish is located at the Town Grove, 42 Ethan Allen St, Lakeville. The best part is; it's free!.

Christine is running a 10K in NYC tomorrow. She writes

It’s the NYCRUNS Firecracker 5k & 10k tomorrow. I’m doing the 10k.

She also took some pictures of, as she put it, our friend this morning.

Team Brickyard - Petit 5K

.

We are 4 now, will soon be 5, and then we'll be 6. The key issue, who owns black running shorts?

Lani started it. Lee and she promoted it. The Petit organization has been very helpful. Currently, Lani, Lee, Mike, and Larry are on the team. Brent'll be added soon (he's registered but will be added to the team probably today). Barbara will be registering soon. You?

Bricks are red so obviously our team color *has* to be red. Black goes well w/ red so see if you own any black trunks.

I am not sure what exactly it means to be a group / team.  Are there group / team winners? If so, how is that determined? If we win will we get prize money? International fame?

July 10th. If you're running, do your best. If you're not, root for the Red and Black!

New Scottish Rite 5K course

The course for the 5K in Newington on July 23rd (Scottish Rite) is different than in past years. It's a little easier in that it eliminates the approx. 3/4 mile fairly steep hill up Lamplighter Lane. It's a two loop course now. The Candlewyck Dr to Stagecoach Lane section on the 2nd loop is shorter and less steep than the Lamplighter section of previous years.

Branford Road Race

Brent, Peter Hawley, Lee, Larry Regan (and many many others) ran the Branford Road Race on Sunday.

Lee placed 2nd in 80+ (11:04 pace). Brent ran 8 minute and very low change. And was a bit ahead of Peter at the end. Larry totally killed it.

Brent and Lee are running the Petit 5K on July 10th at 9 AM. Interested? Link is on the right on the blog. Lee's shooting for a 10 minute pace.

Celebrate and Litchfield

Lani writes (to me):

"Did you run at Brickyard?"

(Answer: Linda and I went to Brickyard and I did the out and back while she walked to the bridge and then back w/ me. Lots of (considerate) bikes passed us. Spotted a bunch of tiny ducklings and their parents and also what we're pretty sure was an eagle flying overhead. Thought of all you guys running races.)

"Barbara and I ran on Saturday, then she went to Long Island.

I got a good pic of Mike at Celebrate West Hartford 5K, and of course there were a lot of other HTC folk. I even got a photo of the juggling runner!

Peter and I went to LHRR where we ran close times.  We never found Christine, but she was there and confirmed Gallows Lane is adequately named. I saw the Manchester Running Company team, but did not see Brent amongst them. (Brent was up in Maine running the Market Square 10K).

I've attached some photos, in case you want them for the blog and you can feel free to use this email text.

Lani"

Tracy, Brent, Barbara, Peter, Lani, Mike and Lee race news

This will be a very incomplete report but this is what we know ...

First off, and I expect we'll hear more on this from Tracy herself but ...   She placed 3rd, ran 81 miles, average pace was 17:23. Three Days at the Fair. NJ.

More locally, Mike and Lani ran in Mystic. Mike ran the 10K, Lani ran the 1/2. Here's a photo.

I did OK at the 10K. Finished in 1:10 which is a 11:20 pace. Lani was still on the course when I had to leave.

Barbara and Peter were at BY.

Lee ran his 164th Connecticut town in Stafford. He  distinguished himself by starting in the wrong race (the 24K) instead of the race he registered for (the 6K). And if that wasn't enough he blew a turn. Ended up running 4 miles instead of 6K. The timer said he could fix it. Pace was about 16 and change. Beautiful trail race.

Brent placed 3rd in the Newington Library 5K

Brent crushes the Race in the Park

Brent

Lee, Barrett True (85 years old)

Brent, Christine, and Lee ran the 5K in New Britain this morning. Brent ran a 7:20 first mile and an overall pace of 7:48. "Best I've run in 3 years" he said when I asked him how he did. Christine met her goal of sub-30 minutes w/ a finish time of 29:45 (9:34 pace).
