Don Osborne

Don Osborne died yesterday. I ran Echo Lake (a 5 miler in Vermont) with him many times. He was 98. He remembered his Boston times to the second (and I think there were about 70 people running it at the time). His wife Marilyn died unexpectedly a few years back.

Running a bit

This week I ran some 1 and 2 mile distances. Very slow but had to test out the knee. No issues and even though its baby steps, I feel the worst is over.
On Saturday I am one of the organizers for the Collinsville Trick or Trot 5K. I created the course for the Dollars for Scholars people and have helped with many of the racing tasks. It's a quick out and back onto the Farmington Rail Trail.

Brent, Tray, Jason, Lee - Mikey's Place and Bay State

Brent and Lee ran Mikey's Place 5K this morning in Wethersfield. This is the 21st annual and had lots of young kids participating. Divisions like girls 9 to 10, boys 9 to 10, girls 11 to 12, boys you get the picture. Such a beautiful thing to see those proud recipients of their trophies.

Mr Stratton managed

234 31 Brent Stratton 25 M 63 4 M60+ 23:45 23:47 7:40

He was preceded by our friends

303 20 Peter Briggeman 16 M 61 2 M60+ 23:03 23:04 7:26
377 27 Kevin Tranberg 22 M 51 3 M5059 23:32 23:34 7:35

And followed by 30 178 Lee Bradley 104 M 77 11 M60+ 34:41 34:42 11:11

East of Wethersfield, Tray and Jason ran the Bay State Marathon.

Tray 4:11
Jason 5:50

Tray bettered her last year Hartford by 5 minutes. She thinks running "nice, slow ultras" are more to her liking. I think 4:11 is a very respectable time.

Brent and Lee are heading to Brickyard Saturday next. Can you join us?

Runner puzzle for Rose

I made a jigsaw puzzle for Rose some time ago (Hartford Marathon 2006). It was given back to me by her daughter Rosetta yesterday. It has embedded runner girls in it.

There are 26 pieces in it. I wonder why?! (It's not a prime number which all my puzzles were. Maybe it has something to do w/ running?) 😊

South Windsor 5 MIler

Lee and Malay Chokshi at the 46th annual South Windsor 5 miler on September 8, 2019.

As Tray pointed out in the log, I ran faster at Brickyard on Saturday than I did in S. Windsor. S. Windsor did have a hill ...

You don't see trophies as much any more. They had more trophies than runners at this one. The woman who placed first got 3 (division, over all and S. Windsor resident). Her daughter (6 years old?) placed 1st and her son placed. There were all of 11 runners total.

Fwd: Hi

Just wanted to say hi to everyone.
I was in the triathlon today, which went down brickyard yard road, I waved!
Mike hope you are feeling better.
Lee, how was your race in Portsmouth?
Tracy, great to see you in South Windsor, nice run!
Brent when is our rematch?
Barbara hope to see you on the trail soon.
I've not been doing much distance, mostly short intervals but I'm going to jump in for hogsback and see what happens.
In the meantime, hope to see some of you at brickyard road, I should be there the next 3 Saturdays

Fwd: The fall distance festival is back!! Sept 22

It's on! Tray asked about it, I talked to Marty about it, he said it looked doubtful, and now ..., it's on!

I don't think I can make it but this is one awesome event and all Brickyarders need to put it on their calendar. Thank you Marty!

Run 10K, 20K, or 30K. How many races do you know that have those options? And it's inexpensive.

The Streak ends

Well.....after 1,660 consecutive days(4.45 years) of running, my streak has come to an end. After my fall on the weekend my knee never improved. Had x-rays this morning. No fractures but bursitis and other tendon issues. Doc assumes I bruised the patella. MRI later today to check the meniscus. If meniscus ok then I'll be back at it soon.

Taking is easy

Due to the pain in my knee I restricted myself to 1 mile today in White River Junction VT.  I had done 3 yesterday but paid for it all day with swelling and a lot of pain. After the mile this morning I walked 2 miles. Need that 1 mile to keep the streak alive! Still painful. I'm OK taking it easy but need to get ready for Hogsback next month. If I can get back to normal running by next week I should be OK.

Lousy run today

Yesterday on my trail run I fell on a dirt section. No injury and no big deal. But, as the day went on it became painful. So painful I could barely walk. This morning I tried to run very slowly and carefully. It was a challenge and could only maintain a run for 1 mile. On my return I walked with only a couple of attempts at running. I rested it as much as possible today with the hope that its minor and will pass. I don't have any swelling or discoloration. My streak may be in jeopardy!

Westport Summer Series 9.3 miler

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3985526951

I ran the 9.3 mile Westport summer series race this morning at 8 AM. Ran into Andie Williamson, Ronnie Behringer and Rob Fryer whom I haven't seen in ages. Went to the Sherwood diner on Rt 1 (Post Rd) after on Ronnie's suggestion.

PS Looks like we've got some formatting issues w/ this new way of posting. Oh well. Works pretty well though, don't you think?!

Metacomet Run today

I did 10 miles mostly on the Metacomet. Started at Res #6 and followed the trail to Penwood where I did a shortened loop. Then headed back on the Metacomet up to Heublein Tower. Fell once and hurt my left knee. Hopefully nothing serious but still very sore 4 hours later. Love getting out in these cool temps.

I have updated the Brickyarders blog in a couple of ways ...

The automatic email notification list has been edited and now you are on it. This means that whenever there is a post to the blog you will be notified of it.

A quick and easy way for you to post something to the blog has been revived. Just send an email to

teamprimalforce.run-4@blogger.com

and it will appear as a post on the blog.

Let us know if all this works.

Tray and I (Lee) will be putting up an announcement on various sites (169, CT Runners, HTC) that the Brickyarders will again be meeting Saturday mornings at 8 AM. (Occasionally earlier in the hot summer months, 7:30 AM, and sometimes Sunday, we'll let you know.)

And remember, when you get to the bridge, you are required to walk. Rose rules!

A clearer, albeit complicated, description of how to post a picture in the log. Good luck.

Lobster Loop - Canton and an idea for The New & Improved Brickyarders!

http://www.plattsys.com/m1shell.php?eventid=1843

Mike, Lani, Barbara & Lee ran it. Barbara was 2 minutes quicker than Lee. I expect Lani was ahead of us all. Mike and Lee crossed simultaneously.

Tracy texted Lee last night and wondered if we could revive our Saturday morning runs at Brickyard or a similar place. I see no reason why not. I chatted w/ Mike and Barbara @ the race and they agree. Let's float the idea among our Hartford Track Club and 169 friends on Facebook and thu word of mouth.

Let the New and Improved Brickyarders find our way back to our roots, find new folks to join us. There are a ton of runners that show up at Brickyard on Saturdays. Let's keep Rose's memory alive. I bet there are still rocks out there. I've got some at home I could spread around.

Zero Prostate

.
Learned of this race from my friend Kim Brinton whose father died of this disease. Brent and I signed up and ran the 5k this morning. First person we saw when we pulled into he parking lot across from the Yard Goats stadium was Lani 😀

We all placed.

We talked about  Rose's passing and are agreed that the Brickyarders and friends will plan a Rose Reunion Run this summer.  Barbara Kream's dad died yesterday so she won't be able to make either Rose's wake or Rose's funeral (tomorrow evening and Tuesday morning).

Seeds of Hope 5k and 10k

Brent and I ran the 10k / 5k in East Hampton on Saturday morning, April 27th. This takes place on the same trail as the Ghost Run. The 5kers ran to a turnaround and came back. The 10kers ran to a turnaround that was past the 5kers turnaound and came back. We both "medaled." I ran 13+ pace and Brent ran a  8:56 pace.

Rich Baber directed the race. Money earned goes to The Seeds of Hope organization which supports work in Puerto Rico.

Iván Fernández Anaya

Very little has been said about this…..On December 2, Basque athlete Iván Fernández Anaya was competing in a cross-country race in Burlada, Navarre. He was running second, some distance behind race leader Abel Mutai - bronze medalist in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the London Olympics. As they entered the finishing straight, he saw the Kenyan runner - the certain winner of the race - mistakenly pull up about 10 meters before the finish, thinking he had already crossed the line.

Fernández Anaya quickly caught up with him, but instead of exploiting Mutai’s mistake to speed past and claim an unlikely victory, he stayed behind and, using gestures, guided the Kenyan to the line and let him cross first.

Ivan Fernandez Anaya, a Basque runner of 24 years who is considered an athlete with a big future (champion of Spain of 5,000 meters in promise category two years ago) said after the test:

“But even if they had told me that winning would have earned me a place in the Spanish team for the European championships, I wouldn’t have done it either. I also think that I have earned more of a name having done what I did than if I had won. And that is very important, because today, with the way things are in all circles, in soccer, in society, in politics, where it seems anything goes, a gesture of honesty goes down well.”

He said at the beginning: “unfortunately, very little has been said of the gesture. And it’s a shame. In my opinion, it would be nice to explain to children, so they do not think that sport is only what they see on TV: violent kicks in abundance, posh statements, fingers in the eyes of the enemy …”

In the interests of kindness, please pass this on.
