Colchester photos

Here are the photos Lani took.

Rose chose the early 9 am start option but after a couple of miles really wanted to run the 10 am race - everybody was too slow. Kelsey got some really bad cramps early on. We hope you recover and that the next one will be kinder to you. Tray broke 2 hours, coming off a week of low mileage and a son who was sick. Lea Crown (Tradition Run) bettered her last Colchester by 4 minutes. Frances with an "e" Smith (Atlanta bound) made us all look bad, clocking a 1:51. All except Lani who did 1:47 (and felt she could have done better). I made my original goal but missed my final goal by a minute.

Other friends in attendance: Neil Mandel, Andie Williamson-Hughes, Kerry Arsenault, Bruce Gould, Margrethe Mentes, Karen Anastasio

Thanks Lani for the pix! Thanks for the ride! Chief photographer LBrad2 was nursing nausea this morning. I picked up some Ginger Ale at Price Chopper. Our neighbor Joann brought some over so now we have more Ginger Ale than anybody on the block.

See you next Saturday at Highcrest. Have a good week.

Colchester Half Marathon Roll Call

30 degress, black ice, hilly course, dirt roads, oh yah and did I mention the hill???? That's Colchester Half Marathon in a nutshell. Present and accounted for: LBrad1, Mamma Rose, Tray, Kelsey, Leah, Frances with an E, Dave Poppel, Becky Wright (volunteering), and yours truly Sweet LeiLani among those who have been in some way connected with our group in the last year. Missing in action: LBrad2, Judy, Dave, Barbara, Mary...we missed you. Come back and join us real soon! [By the way, some of you are in need of nicknames!] Photos to follow, I think Lee has some to add too. Oh, and when you think about your time, remember what that very famous mathematician/physicist said: It's all relative...

Welcome Pat!

Pat Milligan joined us for 16 miles this morning. It's always cool to meet a new person cuz you can share stories, learn what they are interested in etc. etc. Pat hails from Rochester, NY and was in the area cuz his daughter's dancing @ the Warner theater in Torrington this weekend and who'd want to miss that? Pat pretty much "out-classed" us w/ his stat's (try 1:29 1/2 and 3:12 Boston (not sure about the minutes). He ran in High School, took a long break and jumped back in 2 1/2 years ago after losing 80 lbs. He's active in several running groups in his area and said he's in the middle of the pack with one of them. If you run a 1:29 1/2 and are in the middle of the pack, what does this say about how fast the guys and gals in his group are?

Due to high-ish winds Lea bowed out but will see us @ Colchester on Saturday. Frances came down with a head cold and "called in" to wish us a nice weekend. Kelsey was MIA so we couldn't provide Pat w/ a very competitive front but, all in all, we almost kept up w/ him.

Mamma Rose (which is probably spelled wrong, sorry) knocked out 11, about 3 more than she had in mind (I have a formula for Rose: take what she says and add about 3). Also, she was the Earliest Bird, arriving pre-Lani (who got caught in traffic).

All in all, a fine way to spend the morning. And now, it's on to continued CHM training, Iron Man (that's 140.6 miles) Lake Placid, 50K and don't forget those important 5 Ks.

Have a fine week, at work, at play, at wherever.

CHM!!!

Hi all, we are within 10 day forecast range for CHM, according to my BB weather channel app we are looking at 41 and raining on race day.
Hopefully all the snow melts, I snuck out of the hospital for about 30 seconds and it seemed nice.
I may start out at 7-ish on Saturday, hoping to see everyone there including our potential guest from New York.

Re: 1 week until Colchester!

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping some of this great weather continues for the Colchester 1/2 next Sat. This week the schedule (well, according to me :-) ) calls for 16 miles. Since that will take at least 2 1/2 hours, I was wondering if anyone is up for starting at 7:30 a.m. again? If not, that's okay -whoever comes at that time can just run the circle loop to meet up with people who come later.

Hope everyone has had a great week!

14.64

I could be off by (wait, let me check ...) OK, 14.64 miles is correct. Saturday saw Frances (w/ an "e," this is important and I'm sure she knows what I'm talking about), Kelsey, Tray, Lee, Rose, Lani, Mary, Linda (I think that's it) showing up ridiculously early to run Highcrest. Per usual, we all ended up running in groups that changed a few times.

The road was fairly clear (but Lee managed to fall anyway), the air was cold, but not unbearably and spirits were high. Frances (March 20, Atlanta Marathon - same day as O'Hartford 5K) paired off w/ Kelsey eventually. It was great to meet her and hope she can rejoin us in future runs.

Mary and Lee ran together for a bit and then she joined Lani then did some warm car time w/ Linda. Mary's getting advice from several Brickyarders about pacing yourself and the OKness of walking. Hey, if Jeff Galloway says walk / run is the secret, it's *got* to be smart.

At the end of the run, Team Lee/Linda/Kelsey/Lani/Rose showed *eggzackly* how one gets an ailing car to start. Who needs Triple A?

See you all next Saturday.

40 days

Hi Team, guess what? 40 days till the official start of spring, and just 33 days till we return back to daylight savings. There will be an end to this winter, believe it or not!
It was good to hear from you, Chip. I was thinking, maybe you can find a garmin on ebay or Craig's list. I think they are also making a more basic model these days that is much cheaper, but still has all the GPS functions. Is the half marathon you mentioned in Westfield the same day as the 1/4 marathon in West Hartford?
I am happy to report that I have survived week the first of my 24 week ironman training program in one piece so I am planning to run in Wethersfield on Saturday. I have another committment later in the morning, so I'm going to start out around 7:30am if anyone wants to join me. Hope to see everyone there. We'll have to get some miles in this weekend, Colchester is right around the corner! Lani

Lani about to start 2nd loop.

Lee entering 2nd loop.

Lani did "32 something" (about 8 min. pace) and Lee 36:25 (about 9). A lot of people came and decided not to run because it was pretty icy. Rose wisely chose to walk w/ Linda. It was gorgeous out but you really had to be careful. A couple of people fell but didn't get hurt. I'd say fewer than 25 ran it.

Highcrest - Saturday, February 5th

Rose, Kelsey, Tracy and Lee did 12 this morning @ Highcrest. Doing that 2.6 mile loop 4 times was making us feel (per Tray) like "mindless hamsters" so Rose (Navigator Queen) sent us down Collier / Prospect / Clovercrest between loop 3 and 4. Kelsey did the third loop on his own (no doubt @ lightning speed) and headed home. Rose kept talking about running 4 days in a row and I thought she'd pack it in after about 10 but as Lee & Tracy were heading back up the hill to complete the 12 we found a runner clad in fluorescent orange cresting the hill coming toward us. Our very own, Miss Rose. Iron Woman.

Lani and Lee are definites for tomorrow's Cedar Hill 4 Miler. Rose may surprise us and join Linda who will walk it. Weather is iffy but running is like football - it never gets canceled due to weather. Come join us!

Highland Herbie hereby declares tomorrow, Saturday, February 5th, 2011 as a "good to go" day for running and welcomes all Brickyarders to visit him. Start time is the usual 9 am at Highcrest Elementary School, Wethersfield. Miss Rose took Herbie's picture today after Lee, Linda, Judi and she ran / walked in the area. Herbie promises the weather will cooperate. See you there!

PS

Time to re-up your USATF membership (or sign up for the first time). If you want to be part of the HTC team (or some other club team) you need to be a USATF member. And in my case, I need to renew my HTC membership as well.

I have been inspired by two things recently; a book Tracy loaned me ("Running Within") and my decision to join Lani and run/walk the 50K Jack Bristol Lake Waramaug Ultra on April 23rd (my brother's 62nd b'day). I will be 69 2/365.
