Rose had about a mile and a half on the track when Linda and I rolled in. They were on the course as we ran up the hill. Camera ready. Rich Baber and I crossed at the same second. It's been only 3 weeks since he had heart surgery. I placed 2nd. 22:05. Had a lucky bib and got a Dunkin' Donuts coffee and mug package. Brunch w/ 169ers at Cromwell diner.

Beautiful weather. This is the race Tray got her first trophy.

Roxbury 2018

http://iresultslive.com/?op=overall&subop=&racename=HALFMARATHON&eid=3879&place=0&tab=

Well, among the Brickyarders who ran it, two walked away with plaques. Mike placed 3rd (briefly as a female but that was fixed and they gave him the right one) and Tracy 2nd. Tracy cleared 2 hours by about 19 seconds. Jason was close, finishing soon after. Mike writes

"Won 3rd place in my age group at the Roxbury Half Marathon. It was my 35th half marathon and 1,369th consecutive day of running. Good weather and good friends."

Linda and I showed up to cheer on our friends.

Vanessa was just a tad ahead of Tracy (I think) and "medaled."

Hartford Marathon

Mike, Tray, Lani and Lea ran the full this morning. Jason cheered them on. Mike cut 6 minutes off his last year time. Tray ran 4:18, Mike 4:49. Lea took 4:11. Lani took 5:12.

Tray's considering running the Roxbury 1/2 and then a week later seeing how far she can run in 400 minutes at LoPresti's Fall Fling.

Well done all of you!

Here's one more pic (Jason snapped it as she crossed).

Zagata nails 'A' goal

.
Late breaking:

2:59:31 in the 30K this morning.

She writes: "Was thinking about the time you and I ran it in 2:37 or something close to that."

Got me to thinking ... what year was that and what exactly was the time ... ?

Athlinks comes up with ... for me.

(BTW that 2:32:22 was the year I "cheated." (Actually, I blew an important turn early on and tried to make up for it by running an out and back after I "finished" but I am sure I still didn't run the full 18K.) I think the year she's referring to must've been 2012. Those were the days.)

Well done Tray.

Synchronicity, defined

5/16/2011 - Granby - McLean Game Refuge

I think it's time for a little nostalgia. Fell upon this this morning.

Synchronicity is a concept, first introduced by analytical psychologist Carl Jung, which holds that events are "meaningful coincidences" if they occur with no causal relationship yet seem to be meaningfully related.

Boston 2018

.

Best of luck to brother Chip Bradley on Monday next at the Boston Marathon! He has trained well, is tapering now, has his eye set on sub-4. We will be following you as you run the course.

This is what he posted on Facebook.

Hi all. I will be running Boston on Monday, 4/16. It's been a tough winter, but I've kept up with the training and have been making some adjustments to see if I can improve on last year's time.

To follow me on your smart phone or computer, you can:

1. Log into BAA.ORG (the morning of the marathon)
2. Select ATHLETE TRACKING
3. Enter my name as: Charles Bradley
4. Enter my bib number: 24531

Note: My wave begins its race at 11:15 am (when I actually cross the START line... which could be roughly 5 minutes later).

This will be my last marathon, but I'm feeling it might go well (we hope)! The time needed for the usual Boston Marathon qualification is 4:10:00 for men in my age group (65-69) I will be turning 69 on April 23.

My time last year was 4:05:39.

The ave pace for a 4:10:00 marathon is 9:33 per mile.

The ave pace for a 4:05:39 marathon is 9:23 per mile.

I will be trying to improve my time of 4:05:39. I'd be very happy with anything under 4:04:00. The heat was pretty high last year so I would be pleased with cooler weather and maybe a time close to 3:59:59 or under!.

Three days ago, I began "tapering" for the race. It feels good to be running less miles!

I will be posting the results here sometime after the marathon.

Have a happy Patriots Day! Thanks for checking out my progress! I believe the GPS updates will take place every 5k or every 3.1 miles for the 26.2 mile course.

... the announcer read out the time: "3" The rest was drowned out by the roar of the crowd.

Roger Bannister Dies At 88
First To Run Mile In Under 4 Minutes
Associated Press

LONDON — Roger Bannister, the first runner to break the 4-minute barrier in the mile, has died. He was 88.

Bannister’s family said in a statement that he died peacefully on Saturday in Oxford, the English city where the runner cracked the feat many had thought humanly impossible on a windy afternoon in 1954.

Bannister, who went on to pursue a long and distinguished medical career, had been slowed by Parkinson’s disease in recent years.

He was “surrounded by his family who were as loved by him, as he was loved by them,” the family said in a statement announcing his death on Sunday. “He banked his treasure in the hearts of his friends.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May remembered Bannister as a “British sporting icon whose achievements were an inspiration to us all. He will be greatly missed.”

Helped by two pacemakers, Bannister clocked 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds over four laps at Oxford’s Iffley Road track on May 6, 1954, to break the 4-minute mile — a test of speed and endurance that stands as one of the defining sporting achievements of the 20th century.

“It’s amazing that more people have climbed Mount Everest than have broken the 4-minute mile,” Bannister said in an interview with The Associated Press in 2012.

The enduring image of the lanky Oxford medical student — head tilted back, eyes closed and mouth agape as he strained across the finishing tape — captured the public’s imagination, made him a global celebrity and lifted the spirits of Britons still suffering through postwar austerity.

“It became a symbol of attempting a challenge in the physical world of something hitherto thought impossible,” Bannister said as he approached the 50th anniversary of the feat. “I’d like to see it as a metaphor not only for sport, but for life and seeking challenges.”

He might not have set the milestone but for the disappointment of finishing without a medal in the 1,500 meters, known as the metric mile, in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. Instead of retiring from the sport, he decided to chase the 4-minute mark.

Swedish runner Gundar Haegg’s mile time of 4:01.4 had stood for nine years, but in 1954 Bannister, Australian rival John Landy and others were threatening to break it.

“As it became clear that somebody was going to do it, I felt that I would prefer it to be me,” Bannister told the AP. He also wanted to deliver something special for his country.

“I thought it would be right for Britain to try to get this,” Bannister said. “There was a feeling of patriotism. Our new queen had been crowned the year before, Everest had been climbed in 1953. Although I tried in 1953, I broke the British record, but not the 4-minute mile, and so everything was ready in 1954.”

His chance finally came on a wet, cool, blustery May afternoon during a meet between Oxford and the Amateur Athletic Association.

With Chris Brasher setting the pace on the cinder track, they ran a first lap in 57.5 seconds, then 60.7 — 1:58.2 for the half mile. Chris Chataway, a distance specialist, paced a third lap of 62.3 — 3:00.4. Bannister would need to run the final lap in 59 seconds.

With 250 yards to go, Bannister surged past Chataway, his long arms and legs pumping and his lungs gasping for oxygen. After Bannister crossed the finish line, the announcer read out the time: “3” The rest was drowned out by the roar of the crowd.

49th annual Tradition Run

Wanda

Lee, Karen, Michael Leungevity, Dave Hoople

 April Lionberger

Lee and Karen
We certainly didn't break any records but we sure had fun. Karen and Lee crossed together. Actually, this was our 2nd crossing ... when Dave Hoople saw us do it we were told to go back and do it again, just to record the moment. Wanda (and Karen) and a bunch of other Trail Mixers warmed up w/ a 5 mile in the woods run.

Ledyard 5k

.

Happy New Year All!

Taricani and Bradley knocked down the Ledyard 5k yesterday. Not sure what the wind chill values were but it's supposed to be even better (worse?) today, January 1.

Be sure to visit the December 2017 log (http://primepuzzle.com/runlog/december_2017.htm) for the last few entries (especially Taricani's unbelievable streak stats and the younger Bradley's snow angel ridden wind chill remarks).
