Joe Vailonis Memorial 5 Miler - 1/1/11

It was a beautiful day to run. The temperature was in the high 40's! Todd decided to change the course due to the snow in the meadow so we did 5 miles on the road instead. I think there were about 20 runners and the Brickyarders represented 20% of them; Kelsey, Lee, Rose and Lani. Kelsey and Lani were close at the end with times of 35:45 and 36:09. Lee took 41:49 and Rose did 49:50. A kind of mini-Asta Memorial 5 mile out and back course; long slow climb on the way out and a welcome downhill return trip.

Thanks Todd and Kim. It was great way to usher in the new year. Here are some pictures.

It was great to see Peter who gave me the low down on all the courses he'll be taking at Central.

We decided to switch from Brickyard Rd to Highcrest Rd in Wethersfield for our Saturday runs. Just north of the red A marker is Highcrest School where we can park. See you there.  Please call Rose Famiglietti 860-563-6786 for directions. This venue is flexible. We will be checking out other places in the coming weeks.

PS - Lani just emailed me and noted the awesome date: 1/1/11. It's not a prime but, check this out, 1111 = 11*101. Of course we all know that the coolest prime number is 101 (it's a palindrome and it's the 26th prime number). I don't think I have to explain why 26 is cool.

Happy New Year. Hug a Friend!

  1. I must be slippin'. It has just been pointed out to me that 2011 is prime, a sum of 11 consecutive prime numbers and a Sexy Prime! The Latin word for six is sex and a prime p is a Sexy Prime if p + 6 is prime.

  2. Lee- blame the heat wave for your computational issues!

In a similar vein, I have a potential mathematical pursuit in the works...My mother and I came up with this one, and she really wants me to do it. She calls it the "20-30-40".

It involves running a marathon on Saturday 4/30, which would be my 20th marathon, on the 30th day of April, which happens to be my 40th birthday...not sure about this one yet but it does have a ring to it.

  5. To all Brickyarders: Note the date of the Peoples Forest run (see calendar @ right). Tom Buckley will be leading a run there on the 16th at 10. Very informal. Tom has obtained approval from the State Parks director and notified the town of Barkhamsted.

  7. This is one of the Hartford Track Club Winter Series races. As my post above says, Tom Buckley has volunteered to direct it this year. Bill Thramann has directed it the last few years and is giving himself a break this year. It is not listed in the HTC Winter Series schedule this year and I emailed Bill asking him about it. He got back to me with the news that Tom will take it this year. In past years you've had the choice to run it once or twice around, thus the 8.5/17. I was among the few that did it twice. It's a beautiful area. Rose, Lani and Barbara did it. Here are some pix of last year's race.

  8. Definitely looking forward to a change of venues for Saturday during winter! I think it's supposed to be pretty snowy this Saturday, so I'm not sure who's going. Unfortunately, I won't be making it! It's time for the last Christmas holiday gathering for the Cabral family, so we'll be on the road early Saturday morning! Let's hope for nicer weather than is being predicted! Look forward to seeing everyone in the upcoming weeks.
