Tray's talking about the Tinsel Run which is on Saturday the 3rd. It's in Berlin, is 1.95 miles and starts @ 11 AM. (This is a new course; it used to be a 2 miler.) Brent is planning on it. Rose has run it but won't this year cuz she wants to be Mitten-Ready (Sunday 5K in Hartford). I know a bunch of people that do this one. My friend Bob Dacey sent me the hard copy app which I've posted in our race calendar. I'll be there. I'm running Santa's 3.5 in Glastonbury on Sunday.

Reason I mention all this is Lynda Jaeger wants to run 10 either @ Highcrest or Brickyard and is wondering if anybody is planning to be at Brickyard or Highcrest on Saturday. Post a comment here to let us know what your plans are.

I know it's early but ...

Black Friday @ Brickyard

Wonderful run this morning with Lea, Brent, and Mike. We ran to the dirt pile and back, only there is no more dirt pile. It is all paved and ready to use, according to Mike. So we ran 11 and at the parking lot, I egged Brent on since he declared yesterday that he might be going for 14. We only did one more mile, however. Average pace was 9:50. Awesome crisp, sunny morning. Company pretty darn good as well. :)

Thanksgiving races

Lani, Rose, Mike, Chip, Mary and I ran races today.  In Lani's case, two races! Rose placed 1st in age and Lani essentially placed 1st in age cuz we're not counting Mary-Lynn Currier who obviously is from another planet.  Mike managed exactly an 8 minute pace.

http://coolrunning.com/results/11/ct/Nov24_Malibu_set1.shtml
http://coolrunning.com/results/11/ct/Nov24_75thAn_set1.shtml

I ran like a tortoise today compared to all of the above. I ran a 24:50. My race, in my defense, had two semi-killer hills.

Brother Chip emailed me ...

Hi Lee, this is just a quick note before I head out to Brian and Nichole's place in Jamaica Plain, Boston.

Sorry for no post from me following my [not actually] 4th place finish in this last Sunday's Fitchburg 5 Miler.  I later learned I came in 6th.  Results are on Cool Running.  I tried posting a rather detailed note on the Brickyard running log journal, but am afraid I screwed up on the order of button clicking -- and I ended up losing the story (and my Thank-you to Rose for her nice comment to me) -- pressing "Format" then "Help" then "Practice" after my full entry.  So, I guess my minimal sandbox entry is what is left of that.  Oh well ...

Today's 8:00 AM race in Ayer went super well.  JUST missed third place for real this time with a 4th place 23:52 time for 5k.  Weather was stunningly beautiful and a bit chilly.  Huge turn-out of about 700+ runners.  I think I finished in the top quarter over-all but will have to check the official results to confirm.

Oh yes, the picture was taken by a runner named Tim.  He and his wife had one of those smart phones and I took some of him and his group -- which he may also send to me later.

Happy Thankgiving to you, Linda and Mary.  I am waving as I leave the apartments now to go to the train.  Bye, wave, Bye, wave waving wave, Bye-Bye, wave......

Re: [Brickyarders] Upcoming weekend

I'm not running any races on Turkey day but plan to do 8-10 around my neighborhood.  I will be at Brickyard on Fri.  Lea is actually the one who made the suggestion to run on Black Friday at 8:30 a.m.  Hope Brent and Mike can start at that time as well.

Lee, have fun in Vermont and good luck on your 5K!

I don't know if I'm running on too many cylinders or lacking in too many brain cells.  :-P

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Rose will run Highcrest on Friday and invites Lynda Jaeger to join her if she can - 8 AM.

Brent, Tracy and Mike look like they're doing Brickyard on Friday @ 8-8:30 AM. 2nd opportunity for Tray to meet Mike. Brickyard is fairly clear as far as I know. But remember Barb's experience in the Collinsville area and BE CAREFUL!!!

I'll be in Vermont. Not sure when I'm coming back.

Wallingford Turkey Trot Report

Brent, Lea and yours truly ran the Wallingford Turkey Trot 5 Miler today. Here are a few pix of us.

Lea finishing. She was not feeling super good but managed a 43:32 (8:42 pace)

Lea told us about Paradise Hills Vineyard so we went after the race. Did their wine tasting, bought wine and met the owners. Great place. Will be back.

Donna and her husband (and their turkey and her trophy). 13 turkeys were given as random prizes.

Larry Regan PRd w/ a 34:30. Linda took all the pictures (except this one obviously). Larry won one of the turkeys and gave it to Brent who will give it to Middletown Food Pantry. Brent was about a minute and a half behind Larry. Brent placed 1st in his division. Larry loaned me his shirt. I was over dressed.

I ran 37:20 (7:26 pace), about a minute and a half behind Brent. I placed 1st in my division (there were only 4 guys in the 60-69 division).

Brent and Larry at the start

I enjoyed meeting and talking w/ Larry's Mom before and after the race.

Manchester Road Race

I don't know of any Brickyarders who are running Manchester (which makes us pretty weird as I have quite a few friends who are). And I could be wrong. Let me know.

Anyway, it's less than a week away and in case you missed it, there have been a couple of articles in the Courant that are great reads and a couple of photos I just had to share.

For starters, this is what Bekkie, Joe and other Silk City Striders wore last year ...

And then there's what Bekkie and Joe wore in 2009 ...

The following appeared in the Courant yesterday ...

http://www.courant.com/sports/other/hc-mrr-memories-1117-20111116,0,6281068.story

Be sure to read the entire article. You will learn some very cool news at the very end.

Today, Jeff Jacobs wrote a tribute to Johnny Kelley ...

http://www.courant.com/sports/other/hc-jacobs-manchester-road-race-column-1118-20111118,0,592892.column

A lot of history. I never met Johnny Kelley. I obviously missed a great one. I did know Charlie Robbins and ran many races with him. Always barefoot. Even in winter.

Change of plans! Back to Highcrest!

Don't kill me but we're back to Highcrest. We could probably run Brickyard but Rose, my wife and my inner "do the right thing" have all convinced me that going around the saw horses that I'm pretty sure are still telling us the trail is closed is not something we should do. Here's what Farmington Valley Trails Council President Bruce Donald said yesterday. The bolding is mine.

See you at Highcrest Elementary School parking lot at  8 AM tomorrow.

Lee

As of today the entire 22 miles of trail are passable on the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail. Parts need clearing of leaves and small branches however. Please respect the towns that have "closed" signs still up until they take them down. The Farmington River Trail still may have areas that are not passable and I will update ASAP. A huge THANKS to all of the volunteers that worked tirelessly to clear the trails. I will thank you all at the Annual Meeting tomorrow night. Bruce Donald, President, FVTC

Back to Brickyard!

I ran w/ Larry Chaves and 6 other "Amigos" this morning. We did a "practice run" on the Manchester Road Race course. Actually this is not technically true since we did the first mile plus on the greenway trail that parallels the race course. Beautiful.

The real reason I'm posting this tho is to suggest we return to Brickyard Road this Saturday. Larry and several friends were there yesterday and he says it's OK to run it. There are a few saw horses at the trail heads but they went around them and encountered no problems, both in the North and South directions.

I'm motivated to suggest this for another reason: as you may know, the HTC 8K XC Challenge has been cancelled and the MDC has closed the Reservoir 1 / Reservoir 3 area where the race was to have taken place on Saturday so our idea of running there @ 8 AM and then (at least in Mike T's case) racing @ 10 AM is no longer in the cards.

Brent, Lea and I are racing in Wallingford on Sunday (Turkey Trot 5 Mile). So I expect we will take it easy at Brickyard. But I welcome any and all Brickyarders to join us at 8 AM at Brickyard. Winter is fast approaching and I want to get as many Brickyard runs in as we can before we head to Highcrest.

So ... I hope I haven't confused you by switching again.

On my way home from Harrisburg

Hi Everyone,

All done and on the train back home. Here's the breakdown of my race: Finish time: 4:10:46. A solid 15 min. off my Hartford time. I'm very pleased. My splits were kind of even - about 9:22 for the first half and 9:42 for the second half = 9:32 average pace. I didn't hit the wall though - yay! I drank at every aid station except mile 24 (didn't want to stop/slow down for fear of not being able to sustain the pace until the finish). Consumed almost 4 gels throughout the race. Miles 18-20 had some hills, which slowed me down a bit. You're right, Barb - never believe advertisements of a "flat course." I had to dig deep to keep up the pace till the end. Miles 23 - end were hard! Well, I'm still 11 min. away from breaking 4 but for running 2 marathons a month apart, I'm very happy. Thanks for all your support everyone!!

Welcome Michael Taricani - Next Saturday meet @ 8 AM at Reservoir #3

Change of plans. Next Saturday we're going to meet at Reservoir #3 off Farmington Ave. @ 8 AM. Reason: Lee can't run Highcrest cuz he has to deliver race equipment to the Hartford Track Club's 8K XC Challenge

and new guy Michael Taricani is running it so ... we all decided to meet @ the Reservoir and run several loops on the road (the HTC 1/4 Marathon course) instead of Highcrest.

Here's what Michael and I did.

Great to see Lea who'll be running the Wallingford Turkey Trot 5 mile course tomorrow. She's practicing for the real thing which Brent, Lee and she are signed up for (the day after the 8K XC race).

As I write, Ms Vroeginday's en route to Harrisburg. Michael ran Hartford and Hogsback and has the same goal as Tray; break 4 hours. Michael's next marathon? Hyannis. Mid February.

Upcoming Races and an idea for a Winter Series race in Eddie's honor

There are a few races you might not be aware of that I've put on our race calendar.

Brent is running the Kent Pumpkin Run (5 mile) tomorrow.

The next day, in Old Wethersfield, there is a 5K & 10K.

The Hartford Track Club's 8K XC Challenge is next Saturday, the 19th. I'll be helping out, delivering HTC race equipment etc.

The next day, the 20th, is the Wallingford Turkey Trot (5 mile).

Of course, on Thanksgiving Day itself, is the Manchester Road Race. If you prefer a smaller race, there's a 5K in Farmington, (Malibu Fitness).

I've been thinking it might be better if we put on a Winter Series race in Eddie's honor instead of doing something on the 27th. The Winter Series has lots of open weekends this year. What do Brickyarders think about planning something that we can publish in the HTC newsletter that would take place in the Highcrest area for 2012?

Shifting Over To Highcrest

Due to the condition of the Brickyard trail we'll be meeting on Saturday @ 8 AM @ Highcrest Elementary School in Wethersfield. The street address is 95 Highcrest Road, Wethersfield, CT 06109. Here's a map:

There's been interest expressed by three people who want to join us. Mary Franco ran at Brickyard on the 29th (that was just before Connecticut got buried but I'm sure you don't need / want to be reminded). Michael Taricani and Lynda Jaeger have yet to hook up w/ us. I'll email them a link to this post.

Tray's running Harrisburg on Sunday so we'll miss her but will think of her en route. We all want you to have a great race and look forward to your news here, by phone, email, face to face!

For those who need a bigger map to Highcrest, visit Highcrest. Call Rose @ 860 461-5862 for directions if you need them.

your comment on the Brickyarders blog

(I've copied several new people in on this. They, like you, have just joined us or are interested in doing so ...)

Hi Michael -

Discovered your comment on our blog last nite. This is a moderated blog so I had to approve the comment to get it published (which I have done). Sorry we missed each other. Turns out several Brickyarders raced the Airline Trail Ghost run yesterday (I was one of them) so if anybody made it to Brickyard it was a very light turnout.

We'd love to have you join us. This coming Saturday there should be a better turnout and I hope you can join us. However ... due to the storm the conditions on the trail are very iffy and it may be impassable. We may need to move to a different place. Last year when winter was upon us (read: trail impassable) we had many runs starting at Highcrest Elementary School in Wethersfield, CT. These winter-like conditions (read: Nor'Easter) may force this change for this coming Saturday.

Best for you to visit our blog periodically as news of where we will run is posted.

Here's the link to the blog:

http://tinyurl.com/brickyarders

- Lee Bradley

PS

Congrats on Hartford. Many of us ran it.

Sorry so wishy-washy about where we're running. We're a small group of runners and you and several others have either expressed an interest in our group or have recently hooked into it so ... keep checking us out. I think we're awesome and I also want very much to have more people join us .

Happy Birthday today and tomorrow!

Re: [Brickyarders] Well ... That was interesting

Fabulous news, Lee!  I can imagine how thrilled you guys are.  Good luck to you and Rose and Brent at the Ghost Run tomorrow.  I am doing a 10-11 miler by my house.  Barb mentioned that Brickyard may be impassable with downed tree branches.  Someone should check it out before we plan a group run there again.

Last nite, on our way to see "Puss in Boots," which I highly recommend, I got a call from Joann, our neighbor, telling us our power was back on. Linda and I had our first "real meal" since last Sunday at the Cromwell Diner, which I also highly recommend. I have just skimmed the 106 email messages I got this last week. Mostly junk. Tray called me to check how things were a couple of days back. Rose has been taking care of at least 6 people for the better part of the week. Lea called me yesterday and told me she won't run Ghost Run as she's been helping out at her town's shelter all week and needs sleep. We've thrown out all the food in both the upstairs and downstairs freezers and fridge. I've run maybe every third day for about 5 miles, slow. Several friends are still w/o power. I've spent a very large fraction of my days in front of our fireplace, burning very expensive wood (didn't buy the cord that was available a week and a half ago cuz we didn't have the cash and then when we did they were only selling car trunk loads for $40).

Rose and I are running Ghost Run tomorrow. Tray's wondering if anybody's running the Malibu Turkey Day Race (good Manchester alternative). I'll be in Vermont for Thanksgiving and will run a 5K in Barton.

Lynda Jaeger is wondering if anybody's running Brickyard tomorrow. Rose, Lea and I obviously aren't but maybe you are. I'll email her a link to this post so she can know what people are doing via any comments you leave.

I'm going out now to take a picture of the transformer that has been down all week on Constance Leigh Drive. I want to see if it's back up.
